As a parent of a child with Autism, I was emotionally and physically tested with learning how to manage this disorder, and how to provide the best care possible for our child. Through this difficult journey, it has been heartbreaking missing out on some of the simple joys of parenthood, such as:
- My little boy looking into our eyes and smiling
- Hearing his little voice tell us how he feels, what he wants, and what he likes
- Watching him play with other children
- Seeing his excitement to open gifts and play with toys
- Watching him get on the "typical" bus on the first day of school
Like many other families, we found it almost impossible to see past the countless questions, and felt paralyzed by our lack of knowledge of such a complicated disorder. The unknowns blocked the path that led toward the best life possible for Matthew, and for the rest of our family.
But with time, we have built a support network consisting of devoted teachers, counselors, therapists, community supporters, family, and friends. This network is growing every day and has developed into an organization that helps other families who face the challenges of Autism.
We are committed to making it easier for other families with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder to locate, obtain, and use the community resources available to their special needs children in the Upstate, New York area so that these children will be able to live happy, healthy, and productive lives.
MATT's family is committed to providing answers, and to managing Autism together today.
